Welcome to my website. I'd like to share a little of my background and
how I entered into this
wonderful world of painting!
Growing up on the Oregon coast I remember my Grandma Shultz always
painting.....beautiful seascapes,
shorelines, Mt. Hood near Portland, wonderful snow scenes and paintings of the
shipwrecked "Peter
Iredale",
an English ship that had run aground during a storm near Seaside. I
remember many fun
childhood times
spent on that beach climbing on what was left of that old ship that had sunk
into the
sand with only the deck
and bowsprit still evident. Grandma taught several of her children to
paint and
being well known on the west coast she sold many paintings over the
years.
My Mom painted clusters of beautiful, soft colored roses on the doors of the
kitchen cabinets. But, best
of
all, was her painting in the bathroom on the wall around the big bathtub...she
had painted an
underwater scene with seaweed and little fish swimming with
bubbles coming from their mouths, starfish
and crabs crawling on the 'ocean
floor', right next to the tub edge. Years later, asking lots of questions,
I learned she had also taken a mail order course ordered from a magazine!
Being surrounded by so
much talent, I have always had a deep appreciation and
love of painting.
Many years later, with six children of my own and living in Oklahoma, I
learned of painting classes being
offered and I signed up immediately.
First painting in oils and then gradually changing to acrylics in the
early
80's, I've seen many changes coming about in our decorative arts. Although
I love painting nearly
any style or theme and with different mediums, the scenes
with children have always been my favorite.
Do you think all those years
of washing six little faces and clipping 120 fingernails and toenails may be the
reason?
Although becoming a Master Decorative Artist and being awarded the Silver
Palette Award from the
National Society of Decorative Artist have meant a lot to
me, my families patience and support have
meant the most!
I am blessed with the finely crafted wood projects which Max and Donna Crews
provide for me.
And...painting with so many of you in class over the years
keeps me inspired and motivated. I hope
you'll continue to enjoy the
designs!
With warm hugs, Helan
